Lipiflow Thermal Pulsation

Approximately 86% of dry eye patients are affected by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), an eye condition that blocks the glands from secreting essential oils onto the surface of the eye. There are a variety of treatment options available for MGD. However, the only long-term solution is LipiFlow Thermal Pulsation, an FDA approved medical device that is shown to improve gland function in patients suffering from MGD.

The Lipiflow Procedure

LipiFlow® is a Thermal Pulsation System is a drug-free device used by the eye care professionals at Excel Eye Center to treat MGD patients in-office with confidence and efficiency.

The procedure includes a phased pressure profile with adaptive force equalization, and proximal-to-distal peristaltic motion evacuates gland contents as the inner lid is gently heated known as the Vector Thermal Procedure (VTP). The eyes of the patient are also always protected as the contoured design vaults the cornea while the heating and pressure system is regulated with redundant sensors.

After the initial anesthetic drop, our doctors will continue the procedure without the use of any further drugs. Then, we use the LipiFlow system to safely deliver therapeutic heating energies to the meibomian glands of the patient’s eye. As a result, any blockage or obstruction is liquefied and pushed to the surface, thoroughly clearing the glands.

The Effectiveness of Lipiflow

LipiFlow is a systematic technology proven to improve the symptoms in those suffering from MGD. Along with its effectiveness among patients, the Lipiflow System also represents more than ten years of dedicated research and is protected by more than 30 patents. That research includes demonstrating the safeness and long-term effectiveness of the LipiFlow system.

Working with the eye care professionals at Excel Eye Center, you can know whether LipiFlow is the right procedure for you. During your initial screening process, our doctors will perform a series of diagnostic tests that evaluates gland performance and health while determining the cause of your Dry Eye. A series of other tests our doctors may use include compression of the lid under a slit lamp and using Dynamic Meibomian Imaging™ (DMI) which provides a high-resolution picture of your gland structure.

If you are experiencing Dry Eye symptoms and think you might have MGD, LipiFlow may increase long-term eye health and alleviate your Dry Eye and MGD symptoms.
