FIRST AND ONLY FDA-APPROVED THERAPEUTIC TREATMENT
Are you suffering from mild to severe keratoconus? Keratoconus is a progressive eye disease that weakens the cornea and causes it to bulge into a cone-like shape causing distorted vision. One in 2,000 people are currently suffering from this disease and are looking for a solution. Excel Eye Center can provide Corneal Cross-Linking, the first and only FDA-approved therapeutic treatment.
What is Corneal Cross-Linking?
Corneal cross-linking (often called CXL) is a medical procedure designed to strengthen a weakened or thinning cornea. It’s most commonly used to treat keratoconus and corneal ectasia, conditions where the cornea becomes thin and begins to bulge outward, causing distorted vision.
During the procedure, vitamin B2 eye drops (riboflavin) are applied to the cornea and then activated with a controlled amount of UV light. This interaction creates new bonds—“cross-links”—between collagen fibers in the cornea, making the tissue stiffer, stronger, and more stable. Cross-linking doesn’t cure keratoconus or reverse all existing changes, but its main goal is to stop or significantly slow the progression of corneal thinning so vision does not worsen. It is generally a one-time treatment and is considered the standard of care for halting keratoconus progression.
Treatment Options
Keratoconus Treatment
While those with milder forms of keratoconus can find occasional relief with corrective eyeglasses and contact lenses, many require surgical and therapeutic treatment. Corneal Cross-Linking combines the use of ultra-violet light and riboflavin eye drops to strengthen corneal tissue and halt the bulging of the eye’s surface.
Avedro’s Photrexa/KXL System is the only FDA-approved procedure for progressive keratoconus in the United States. Corneal Cross-Linking can significantly improve the vision of patients and reduce the need for corneal implants.
Along with the treatment of keratoconus, Corneal Cross-Linking can be used in the treatment of patients suffering from complications following LASIK or other vision correcting surgeries.
Corneal Cross-Linking Procedure
Corneal Cross-Linking is a medical procedure that combines the use of ultra-violet light and riboflavin (vitamin B2) drops to create new corneal collagen cross-links. The treatment includes Photrexa® Viscous (riboflavin 5’-phosphate in 20% dextran ophthalmic solution), Photrexa® (riboflavin 5’-phosphate ophthalmic solution) and the KXL® system. The combination of these medications results in a shortening and thickening of the collagen fibrils as well as stiffening of the cornea.
