Laser Hair Removal

Shaving isn’t very effective and doesn’t last for more than a day or two. Waxing and plucking are painful and time-consuming. If you’re fed up with these procedures and ready to try something more permanent, laser hair removal may be just what you’re looking for.

What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a cosmetic treatment that uses concentrated light energy to reduce or permanently remove unwanted hair. During the procedure, a laser targets the pigment (melanin) in the hair follicle, converting light into heat. This heat damages the follicle enough to slow or stop future hair growth. Because hair grows in cycles, multiple treatment sessions—usually spaced several weeks apart—are needed for the best and longest-lasting results.

It can be used on many areas of the body, including the face, legs, underarms, bikini area, chest, and back. Laser hair removal is generally safe, fast, and much longer-lasting than shaving or waxing. Most people experience minimal discomfort, often compared to a quick snap of a rubber band, and little to no downtime. While results vary based on skin tone, hair color, and the laser technology used, many individuals achieve significantly smoother, finer, and slower-growing hair over time.

There are a few things you can do to be better prepared for a laser hair removal session. First, limit plucking and waxing for at least six weeks before your treatment. The laser targets the hair’s roots, and these procedures remove these roots, thereby limiting the effectiveness of laser treatment. You should also try to limit your exposure to the sun for six weeks before your treatment. Sun exposure makes the treatment less effective and, more importantly, increases the chances of post-treatment complications.

Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Most patients require six to eight treatments before hair is permanently gone. At Excel Cosmetic Surgery Center, we use the latest in laser hair removal technology — the Syneron eMax System. This laser uses traditional optical energy to treat the hair follicle, as well as radio frequency (RF) energy deeper in the skin to further treat the area. This provides a more complete treatment of the follicle, and often, fewer treatments to achieve the desired results.

After the treatment, the treated area will look and feel like it’s sunburned. This will only last for a day or two. Cool compresses and moisturizers can help alleviate the discomfort. During the course of the next month. The hair in the treated areas will fall out. It helps, during this period, to wear sunscreen to prevent temporary changes in the color of the skin.
