Excel Eye Center Acquires Mixed Astigmatism Technology for LASIK Patients

July 11, 2002, Provo, UT- Excel Eye Center is now offering a new, state-of-the-art VISX Star Excimer Laser System with mixed astigmatism treatment technology. Patients with "mixed astigmatism" basically are those who have MORE astigmatism than nearsightedness. If you have previously been told that you had "too much astigmatism" to be safely treated, this may be the news you have been waiting to hear. This feature adds to the broad range of approvals already available with the VISX Star 3 laser, allowing treatment of virtually every refractive error.

In refractive surgery such as LASIK, the surgon can improve vision by using the cool beam of the excimer laser to gently reshape the cornea and focus light closer to the retina in the back of the eye. This can solve refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Excel's VISX Star 3 also features the active track technology and variable spot scanning for patients with larger pupils. VISX is one of only two laser manufacturers with FDA approval to treat mixed astigmatism, a breakthrough for many people who previously weren't candidates for LASIK.
